A special ceremony was held this past Sunday, September 11, 2016, on the Bethel Municipal Center Lawn: “The 15th Anniversary Observance of the Terrorist Attack on the Pentagon and World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.”

A special ceremony was held this past Sunday, September 11, 2016, on the Bethel Municipal Center Lawn: “The 15th Anniversary Observance of the Terrorist Attack on the Pentagon and World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.”
The ceremony began (view videos below) at 5:55 p.m. with a procession of firefighters, police and medical responders (including Bethel and Stony Hill FDs) departing from the the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department’s South Street Fire House, marching through P.T. Barnum Square onto School Street and ending at the Bethel Municipal Center Lawn.
Of special note is that the firefighters and EMT’s were not in formal uniform but in their “work clothes” as were the first responders on 9/11/01.
The song “Proud To Be An American” (Lee Greenwood) was played as the procession approached the Municipal Center property and took formation near the flag. The company was brought to attention and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, after which “God Bless America” was played.
The welcome address was by First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker. He said in part, “Today we’re going to pause and remember the civilians and the military personnel from the Pentagon, we’re going to remember the incredibly brave passengers from United 93, those poor unfortunate individuals who lost their lives just going to work on a regular day in the World Trade Center, and most of all the first responders. The fire and police personnel who went into those buildings and lost their lives giving everything to try and save someone, a few of their fellow citizens. And let’s remember also those who didn’t lose their lives but continue to suffer today from the health effects working for days and weeks toiling in the toxic smoke from that ruined center. So we will remember their sacrifice and we will remember them.”
He continued, “Let me conclude by saying one more thing. I don’t think I’m going to shock anybody by saying that, or observing that we are living in a very difficult time right now. Our country is divided. We have a very contentious election in front of us, but I was thinking about that this morning and thinking that this is the day above all we should all remember that what unites us as a people is far stronger than the small disagreements we might have. So let’s pause and think about that. Again thank you for being here to remember all of the sacrifices.” (View video of First Selectman Knickerbocker’s speech below.)
“Comfort” (Isaiah 40:28-31) was read by the Rev. Rachel Fay Bean of the First Congregational Church of Bethel.
The National Anthem “God of Our Fathers” was sung by all who wished to participate.
The “Prayer for Justice and Peace” was read by Father Robert Wolfe, Parochial Vicar, of St. Mary’s Church.
Rev. Rachel Fay Bean read: “At this solemn moment we honor and remember:
-those killed or wounded in the World Trade Center and Pentagon
-the passengers in the planes used as weapons
-the victims’ loved ones whose world was turned upside down
-the police, firefighters and medical responders many of whom lost their lives trying to save others and all of whom were changed forever
Please keep silence as the bell is tolled fifteen times to mark off the number of years that have passed since one of the worst days our nation ever had to face.”
A bell tolled 15 times.
A prayer was recited together:
Tomorrow is another day, O God
We know not what it will bring forth,
but make us ready, Lord, for whatever it may be,
If we are to stand up, help us to stand bravely,
If we are to still sit, help us to sit quietly,
If we are to lie low, help us to do it patiently,
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the facing of each new day. Amen.
The song “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” was then sung.
In conclusion the flag was retired solemnly and the Town’s emergency alarm was sounded, after which the firefighters, police and emergency medical personnel marched away to the South Street Fire House. “The Stars and Stripes Forever” (J. P. Sousa) and “Thunderer” (J. P. Sousa) were played.
