31-year-old Charged with Double Murder after Gunning Down Parents during Domestic Shooting in Georgia

Powder Springs, Georgia — A 31-year-old Georgia man has been arrested after allegedly executing his mother and stepfather inside their home in Cobb County. Police say the shocking killings occurred after the couple returned from celebrating the stepfather’s birthday.

Suspect Identified

Authorities have charged Martin Duberry, 31, with two counts of felony murder as well as multiple other charges related to the incident, including:

  • Eight counts of aggravated battery
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime

The suspect reportedly called 911 himself to report the shootings after the fatal attack.

Victims: Monica Brookins and John Wells

The victims, Monica Brookins, 72, and John Wells, 73, were rushed to a local hospital after being found with multiple gunshot wounds. Police reported that Brookins was shot five times while Wells sustained three gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Friends and neighbors described the couple as kind and welcoming. Neighbor Kay Hughes told local media –

They just don’t have a heart, I guess. They were letting him live in their house.

Another neighbor, Sanaa Pygatt, recounted seeing police respond with guns drawn as Duberry emerged from the home.

Suspect’s Motive

According to the arrest warrant, Duberry told investigators he had grown “tired of them and just wanted to be alone.” Police allege that he did not know how many times he shot his mother and stepfather beyond the first headshots.

Duberry had been living with the couple, who neighbors described as always friendly and kindhearted. Hughes said of the victims:

They were always super nice. Always waving to you, always saying hi to you. … They were just good people.

Authorities described the killings as an isolated domestic situation.

Investigation Ongoing

Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting. Duberry remains in custody as officials work to gather additional evidence and confirm details regarding the incident.

Officials have not released any information about a defense or attorney statements on behalf of Duberry. Neighbors and friends expressed shock over the violence, questioning how such a tragedy could occur in a household that had previously appeared peaceful.
