New York City, NY – A 27-year-old man was slashed across the face outside a Lower East Side subway station during the Monday morning rush hour, part of a recent spate of attacks in and around the city’s subway system, police said.
Random Attack Details
The victim had just exited the East Broadway E and F train station around 7:50 a.m. when a stranger approached him on Canal Street near Essex Street. Without saying a word, the assailant slashed the man across the face before fleeing.
The victim was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. He required eight stitches to close the wound. Police reported that the attacker remains at large.
Related Subway Incidents
The unprovoked assault comes just two days after another attack on a Midtown subway platform, where two men in their 20s assaulted two victims, ages 37 and 39, at the 57th Street F train platform just after 11 p.m. Saturday.
One man was slashed on the hand, while the other was pushed onto the tracks, sustaining a cut on his elbow. Both victims were taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition.
Surveillance images released by the NYPD show the suspects wearing hoodies, masks, and coats in black, gray, purple, and orange, as per reports.
Earlier on Saturday, a 37-year-old woman was punched after confronting a man attempting to grope her at the Canal Street A train station. The suspect, last seen wearing black jacket, black sweatshirt, white T-shirt, black pants, and white-and-black sneakers, fled the scene. The victim refused medical attention.
Previous Subway Murder
These attacks follow the deadly assault of 64-year-old Italian immigrant Nicola Tanzi at the Jay Street-MetroTech station in Brooklyn on Tuesday night. David Mazariegos, 25, a career criminal, has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at Rikers Island without bail.
Crime Statistics
While subway felony assaults have slightly increased this year (453 reported incidents vs. 445 in 2024), the total number of murders is lower (four so far this year vs. eight last year). Overall subway felony crime has declined about 4%, with 1,639 incidents compared to 1,706 last year, according to NYPD data released Sunday.
