Morgan County, IN – A 22-year-old man from Noblesville was arrested on Wednesday evening after allegedly driving under the influence, striking two police vehicles, and leading deputies on a high-speed chase that reached 108 mph in Morgan County, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).
The suspect, identified as Nathaniel Swift, 22, was first spotted driving at 108 mph in a 45 mph zone near Henderson Ford Road and Rinker Road. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but Swift reportedly refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit.
Pursuit Across County Lines
The chase continued onto the southbound lanes of I-69, stretching several miles before ending near mile marker 141.8 by SR 37 and Teeters Road. Authorities said the pursuit concluded after Swift’s vehicle developed mechanical problems, forcing him to stop.
During the pursuit, Swift allegedly struck two law enforcement vehicles, causing minor damage but no reported injuries to officers.
Charges Filed Against Swift
Following the pursuit, Swift was taken into custody without further incident. He now faces multiple preliminary charges, including:
- Operating While Intoxicated (OWI)
- OWI Endangerment
- Criminal Recklessness with a Motor Vehicle
- Resisting Law Enforcement
- Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident
- Criminal Mischief
According to Fox59, the Morgan County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and decide on formal charges in the coming days.
Dangers of Drunk Driving
Authorities emphasized the dangers of drunk and reckless driving, particularly at speeds exceeding 100 mph. “This kind of behavior endangers not only the driver but also law enforcement officers and the public,” MCSO said in a statement.
The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks posed by impaired driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), alcohol-related crashes claim over 10,000 lives in the U.S. each year, making them a leading cause of preventable traffic fatalities.
Community Safety Efforts
Morgan County law enforcement has been increasing efforts to crack down on reckless driving, especially during late summer and early fall when DUI-related crashes often rise. Deputies encourage residents to report suspected drunk drivers and to always designate a sober driver when consuming alcohol.
Looking Ahead
Swift remains in custody as he awaits his first court appearance. If convicted on all charges, he could face significant prison time, fines, and a long-term suspension of his driver’s license.
