Tuscaloosa, AL — A tragic multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 359 early Sunday morning claimed the life of a 21-year-old Tuscaloosa woman and left five others injured, according to the Tuscaloosa Police Department (TPD).
The deadly crash underscores the dangers of highway incidents and the importance of caution when stopping on busy roads.
Initial Crash Triggers Chain Reaction
Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 2 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-359. The crash began when Cierra Brena Anthony, 21, and another driver were involved in a collision and had exited their vehicles. While both individuals were standing near the initial crash site, a second collision occurred, this time involving five additional vehicles, creating a chain reaction.
Victim Dies at the Scene
Tragically, Cierra Brena Anthony was struck during the chain reaction and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that the other driver involved in the initial crash also sustained injuries but survived.
Five additional victims were transported to DCH Regional Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening, authorities said. Emergency personnel worked swiftly to attend to those hurt in the chaotic accident, according to the reports.
Traffic and Investigation Updates
As of Sunday morning, southbound lanes of I-359 remained closed while TPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit and the Northport Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit investigated the scene. The closure caused significant traffic delays in the area as crews processed evidence and documented the crash for the ongoing investigation.
Police have emphasized that the cause of the multi-vehicle collision remains under investigation. Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant dashcam footage to contact the Tuscaloosa Police Department to assist with the inquiry.
Safety Reminder for Drivers
The fatal crash serves as a sobering reminder for drivers to exercise caution when encountering accidents on highways. Authorities recommend slowing down, keeping a safe distance, and remaining inside vehicles whenever possible if involved in a crash, especially on high-speed roads like I-359.
Incidents like these highlight the importance of traffic safety and following emergency protocols to avoid further injuries or fatalities.
