Cranford, NJ – A grieving community came together Tuesday night to honor two teenage girls, both 17 years old, who were fatally struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash on Monday evening.
Tragic Accident
The victims, best friends riding e-bikes, were hit around 5:30 p.m. near Burnside and Lincoln avenues while returning home from a school event. Authorities report that both girls died overnight following the collision.
The vehicle involved is believed to be a black 2021 Jeep Compass Utility 4D Altitude 4WD with tinted windows. The alleged suspect, also reportedly 17 years old, initially fled the scene but was later located and taken into custody. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the collision was intentional or accidental.
Community Vigil
Hundreds of residents gathered on a quiet street in Cranford Tuesday night, lighting candles and sharing memories of the two young victims.

Cranford resident Brandi Schmidt expressed the shared grief:
“I don’t think any of us had a decent night’s sleep because it could be our own. You put yourself in their shoes and come out and support.”
Neighbors also recalled the girls’ kind and helpful nature. Mary Campbell, who lives next to one victim’s family, said, “Beautiful young girl, very good student, very friendly, always helping the parents out. I hugged her brother last night and there are no words to make this any easier for him.”
Ongoing Investigation
The Union County Prosecutor’s Office is urging anyone who was traveling near Hillcrest Avenue, Burnside Avenue, and Lincoln Avenue around the time of the crash to review home surveillance or dash camera footage.
Investigators are specifically looking for video showing the suspected vehicle before or after the crash, as well as any eyewitness accounts.
