WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Florida law enforcement agencies have announced a major victory in the fight against drug trafficking after a joint operation between state and federal authorities led to the seizure of 173 kilograms of cocaine, valued at approximately $17.3 million, during a traffic stop on the Florida Turnpike earlier this month.
Major Drug Interdiction Operation
The large-scale bust was revealed during a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon at the DEA Palm Beach Field Office.
The briefing was led by Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins, who was joined by Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Dave Kerner. Officials used the event to emphasize the importance of law enforcement collaboration and public safety efforts in curbing the flow of illegal drugs across the state.
How the Bust Unfolded
According to authorities, the DEA’s West Palm Beach office had received intelligence about a semi-truck believed to be transporting narcotics from the Mexican-Texas border into South Florida.
Acting on that tip, members of the Florida Highway Patrol’s Criminal Interdiction Unit (FHP-CIU) located the vehicle traveling southbound on the Florida Turnpike and conducted a lawful traffic stop for inspection.
During the stop, troopers discovered a concealed compartment built into the truck’s structure. Inside the hidden trap door were several duffel bags filled with cocaine, as per CBS News.
The individuals involved in the transport—one of whom had previously been deported from the United States—were taken into custody and later transferred to federal authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
State Officials Commend Law Enforcement Collaboration
Praising the success of the operation, Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins highlighted the ongoing efforts to protect Florida communities from drug trafficking networks.
“This operation is a powerful example of our commitment to law and order,” Collins said. “We will find you, we will arrest you, and we will always stand on the front lines to protect Floridians from those who threaten our safety and our future.”
Executive Director Dave Kerner echoed those sentiments, stressing the importance of border security and how stricter enforcement helps disrupt transnational narcotics routes.
“With the southern border shut down, transnational narco cartels can no longer simply walk across with guns, drugs, and human couriers,” Kerner said. “This forces cartels to move large amounts of narcotics in ways that allow us to interdict and investigate their supply chains.”
Long-Term Impact and Previous Seizures
Officials noted that this operation reflects Florida’s ongoing efforts to dismantle international drug trafficking networks.
Since 2019, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has recovered over 14,000 kilograms of illegal narcotics, including:
- 925 kilograms of cocaine
- 23.5 kilograms of fentanyl
- 14 kilograms of heroin
- 9,600 kilograms of marijuana
- 19 kilograms of MDMA
Authorities say these seizures have prevented millions of dollars’ worth of illegal drugs from reaching Florida neighborhoods and have disrupted multiple smuggling operations tied to transnational criminal cartels.
Continuing the Fight Against Drug Trafficking
The DEA and Florida Highway Patrol continue to work closely with federal partners to identify and dismantle major narcotics distribution routes. Officials reaffirmed that intelligence-led enforcement remains key to detecting concealed drug shipments before they reach communities.
