Elmore County, AL — Authorities say a 12-year-old driver of a personal watercraft was injured in a crash on August 31 that launched the child airborne and onto a road near Lake Martin. The child was airlifted to a hospital following the accident.
Crash Details
Capt. Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed the crash occurred at 1 p.m. in Little Kowaliga Creek on Lake Martin. The child was operating a 2024 Sea-Doo 300 while towing another 12-year-old on a knee board.
The watercraft struck a causeway near Wake Robbin Road, which extends out into the lake, causing the child driver to be thrown from the Sea-Doo and land on the roadway.
Injuries and Rescue
The young driver was seriously injured in the impact and was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the child being towed on the knee board released the rope just before the crash and was unharmed.
Authorities told the Montgomery Advertiser that the identities of the two minors have not been released due to their age.
“The Sea-Doo struck the causeway,” Burkett said. “One child was injured and airlifted for treatment, while the other was not harmed.”
Investigation Underway
The Marine Patrol Division of ALEA is leading the investigation. At this time, no additional details have been released regarding possible factors that led to the collision.
Officials say the case underscores the importance of water safety education and proper supervision when minors are operating powerful watercraft.
Water Safety Awareness
Experts stress that even experienced riders should take precautions when operating personal watercraft. Safety recommendations include:
- Always wear a life jacket when riding or towing others.
- Observe causeways, buoys, and markers to avoid hazards.
- Provide close adult supervision when minors are operating watercraft.
- Never tow others without proper distance from docks, roads, or bridges.
- Keep speeds safe and manageable in areas with heavy recreation.
Community Concern
Lake Martin is a popular destination for boating and water sports, especially on holiday weekends. Local residents expressed concern after the crash, noting that increased traffic on the lake often raises the risk of accidents.
The investigation remains ongoing, and ALEA has urged boaters and riders to exercise caution as summer activity on the lake continues.
