12 Major Road Closures this Week in Michigan; Drivers Advised to Check Beforehand

MICHIGAN – Drivers should prepare for a busy week on the roads as more than 50 construction projects and special events are set to impact traffic from Sunday, Oct. 5, to Saturday, Oct. 11, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

Traffic disruptions are expected on major highways including I-96 in Livingston and Wayne counties, U.S. 131 in Emmet and Charlevoix counties, I-496 in Eaton County, I-94 in Washtenaw County, and U.S. 127 in Ingham County.

Below is a breakdown of 12 significant closures drivers need to watch for this week. All schedules are weather-dependent, and MDOT urges motorists to slow down and follow posted signage in work zones.

I-496 in Eaton County

Starting Monday morning, the westbound lane of I-496 under Creyts Road will close for bridge maintenance. The lane is expected to reopen around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

I-96 in Livingston County

Two westbound lanes of I-96 near Mason Road in Howell will close for maintenance from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Plymouth Road in Wayne County

Plymouth Road (Old M-14) between Levan Road and Farmington Road will see nightly lane reductions starting Monday. Crack sealing work requires closures from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. until Oct. 14.

I-96 in Wayne County

One lane of eastbound I-96 between Selden Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will close from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for utility work.

U.S. 131 in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties

Tree removal operations will trigger lane and shoulder closures along U.S. 131, stretching from Lears Road in Emmet County to M-75 north junction near Walloon Lake in Charlevoix County. Work may extend up to 40 feet from the white lines and is expected to finish mid-December.

Drivers should watch for traffic regulators and temporary traffic signals.

U.S. 31 in Mason County

One northbound lane of U.S. 31 near the Pere Marquette River will be closed from 9 a.m. Monday until Oct. 18 for ongoing maintenance work.

U.S. 131 in Kalamazoo County

As per MLive, the left lane of U.S. 131 in both directions between H Avenue and the Business U.S. 131 bridge will close daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Full closures will occur from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, and again from 10 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday.

I-96 in Wayne County (Near University of Detroit Mercy)

Intermittent single-lane closures will affect the eastbound right lane from Selden Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

U.S. 131 in Kent County

Ramps from Market Street to U.S. 131 will close from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday in Grand Rapids.

Moving shoulder closures are planned for both directions between Pearl Street and Wealthy Street.

The northbound U.S. 131 ramp to eastbound I-196 will remain closed from Friday evening until 6 a.m. Monday.

M-153 in Wayne County

The three right lanes of Ford Road (M-153) between Greenfield Road and the Southfield Freeway (M-39) will close from 7 a.m. Wednesday until 5 p.m. Saturday.

The northbound Southfield Freeway ramp to Ford Road will also close Wednesday, with an expected reopening on Nov. 7.

U.S. 127 in Ingham County

Intermittent total closures are planned overnight Thursday into Friday on northbound U.S. 127 between Holt Road and I-96, 9 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday.

Drivers cannot access the exit ramp from northbound U.S. 127 to eastbound I-96 during this time.

I-94 in Washtenaw County

One eastbound lane of I-94 in the Lakewood area will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, between Pinewood Street and Burr Oak Drive.
