Perfect weather welcomed animal lovers and their pets to Meckauer Park in Bethel, Connecticut, on Sunday, September 27, 2015, to participate in the Danbury Animal Welfare Society (DAWS) 26th Annual Walk for Animals, which took place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Perfect weather welcomed animal lovers and their pets to Meckauer Park in Bethel, Connecticut, on Sunday, September 27, 2015, to participate in the Danbury Animal Welfare Society (DAWS) 26th Annual Walk for Animals, which took place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The Walk for Animals is a non-competitive leisurely walk for dogs and their owners to help raise funds and awareness for Danbury Animal Welfare Society.
Hundreds of dogs and their owners arrived for he annual fundraiser and mingled on the lawns and among the many vendors that partially lined the park path where the dog walk would take place. Most vendors were selling or promoting dog-related items.

First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker stopped by and was seen talking to Lynn Galvin, co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 50711, who was holding her pet in her arms.

CT State Representative Dan Carter (right) attended the DAWS event.
We also spotted CT State Representative Dan Carter, who showed us a photo of the shelter dog he’d just adopted from “Angels Among Us” Animal Rescue, who operate out of TN, VA, CT, MA, and NY. He named the dog Molly.

The dog walk began at 11:00 a.m. and made 4 laps around the park. It was quite an assortment of dogs and a treat for any dog lover’s eyes. Walking the path that goes around the Meckauer Park makes you realize what a beautiful park it is and that it’s also a large park. People were ready to eat and relax at the walk’s end.

“The Green Grunion” food truck was on hand selling primarily Mexican “San Diego style” Burritos and other treats. We tried the Vegetarian/Squash Burrito and Breakfast Burrito of Steak/Eggs/potatoes, both were delicious and generous portions.

Reverend Norma Schmidt from St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Bethel, CT, did the blessing of the animals for those who wished to partake. Prayers were read and participants could read along from the prayers on the flyers that were handed out.

A dog agility course was available for anyone who chose to use it. Large and small dogs alike had fun, guided by their owner, jumping over rails or jumping through hoops to name a few.

Many Bethel High School students were on hand to help out in many ways, distributing free water or t-shirts, working at the registration table, setting up the agility course and guiding owners there.

Girl Scout troop number 50711 helped to keep water bowls filled and distributed throughout the park and helped out at the dog walk in other ways. Please note that with their hard work and dedication, Troop number 50711 created the idea of a Bethel Bark Park and with their persistence and hard work the Park became a reality.

EMC Entertainment’s DJ Eddie Cunningham provided the music for the event, and included the song “Who Let the Dogs Out.”
Award-winning author Jeanne Rogers had her latest books at the event, “Tee Sword of Demelza” and “The Gift of Sunderland,” which are Australian Fantasy Adventures where endangered animal heroes roam the pages.

Sky Zone, an indoor trampoline park in Bethel’s Clarke Business Park, had information about fitness events, birthday parties, corporate events, Ultimate 3-D Dodgeball and SkySlam Basketball. TFW – Training for Warriors – of Bethel (Fitness Center, Personal Coaching, Physical Fitness) was promoting a healthy lifestyle for “the best version of you.” Dr. Cheryl Chappa, of “Your At-Home Vet” provides veterinary care for your pet in the comfort of your home. New Fairfield Animal hospital was also there.

DAWS had several large tables filled with numerous items that were raffled off at the end of the event. This included 192 cans of cat food, won by Greg and Mini Kuehn of Southbury, CT, who kindly donated the food back to DAWS. The Kuehn’s have been DAWS volunteers since 2009. They had their two dogs with them, Gigi, and Shannon who was a DAWS dog, Greg said.
