UPDATE: Lone Sniper Shoots 12 Police Officers, 5 Fatal, in Dallas ‘Ambush,’ Police Explode Bomb Robot, Kill Gunman

Police used a ‘bomb robot’ and detonated the explosive device to kill a gunman at approximately 2:30 a.m. on July 8, 2016, after several hours of hostage negotiations failed and 12 Police Officers were Shot, 5 Fatal and 7 Injured.

In a news press conference on Friday morning, Dallas Police Chief David Brown stated, “We cornered one suspect and we tried to negotiate for several hours” but “negotiations broke down” and turned into “an exchange of gunfire with the suspect.”

According to law enforcement officials, the suspect is identified as Micah Xavier. Johnson, 25, a Dallas resident, the LA Times reports. 

CNN reports that Johnson was possibly in the US military Army Reserves where he might have received training on how to use firearms.  Johnson lived with his mother and is from Mesquite, Texas.

Chief Brown said the gunman was upset “with white people” and with recent police shootings.  He was not affiliated with any groups and he acted alone, Chief Brown said.

The gunman had indicated that IEDs would eventually be found, Brown said, which referred to explosives.  “He wanted to kill officers. And he expressed killing white people, killing white officers, he expressed anger for Black Lives Matter,” Brown said.

In a report released back on Nov. 2015, “Dallas police officers involved in shootings will now be able to keep their names out of the news longer and return to the job more quickly.” 

The report states that Chief Brown “has agreed to withhold officers’ names for 48 hours after a shooting incident” but he also has the option to reveal names earlier when appropriate.

 As Bethel Advocate reported earlier, in a message from DART: “The Dallas Area Rapid Transit family is grieving the loss of police officer Brent Thompson, 43, who was killed during Thursday night’s protest in Downtown Dallas. Officer Thompson is the first officer killed in the line of duty since DART formed a police department in 1989. He joined the DART Police Department in 2009.”

We are now waiting for Attorney General Loretta Lynch to give a statement which is scheduled to occur shortly.
