The First ‘Hero Town Hall’ Meeting Revealed Heart-Wrenching Stories of Drug Addiction, But Aims to Make a Difference in the Substance Abuse War

It can happen to anyone, anytime. No one is immune. Good families with boundaries set for young people, or families with a history of addiction. It can reach an only child, or families with many siblings. It can strike in any family, any person, young or old, and you might not even know about it at first, because addicts become skilled in deception. We are talking about addiction to opioids, heroin, or any number of other substances, that have become a local and national epidemic. Some families who are going through addiction within their family may find it hard to talk to each other. However, you need to speak to your children if your family is going through this type of problem. Discussing Addiction Treatment With Your Kids or partner could be a good way of helping you or your partner deal with what is happening and may help you on the road to recovery.

We learned that addiction can start by a child seeing how to do drugs on TV, or by using the “gateway drug” marijuana, or by snorting crushed up pills. When the pills or marijuana are no longer available they can turn to heroin. We learned there are signs to look for, be it drug paraphernalia or physical or behavior aspects, as a sign someone is using drugs. Drugs could also find their way into schools and the hand of children. Some concerned members of the community would argue that it is the school’s responsibility to prevent this from happening, conducting drug tests similar to this 7 panel drug test to any student who might be suspected of using and providing drugs on school grounds. Others argue that the responsibility rests with the parents who should educate and inform their children about the dangers and risks of using drugs.

Donald Olson is the founder of the recently formed HERO Project” in Bethel, Ct. The HERO name represents “Heroin Education to Resist Opiates.”

Thanks to Olson, a small group of concerned citizens gathered in Bethel a few months ago to brainstorm about how to bring awareness to the heroin and opiates addiction problem plaguing young people in our Connecticut communities, and how to save lives. They quickly realized there are many aspects to address concerning this issue including how to determine if your child is at risk and what parents can do, or who whom they can turn for advice or solutions, if there is a problem with drugs.

The Bethel HERO Project’s mission is “A caring community working together to raise awareness through education and events about the need to resist heroin and opiate abuse.”

The group offers information and sources to lead you to the professionals in the field. Their aim is to create awareness about addiction, but they do not tell you which choice to take for help, recovery or rehabilitation, as each case is individual and may work differently, for different individuals or situations, based on many factors. They instead provide much information and sources for you to decide upon based on your particular situation.

The Hero Project has held two public events so far. The first event was a “Pizza Challenge” held last March, attended by over 100 individuals. You can read about that event below this article, or click here to read the full story.

Last Wednesday, April 13, was the second event, the “HERO Town Hall” meeting, a first of this format with individual speakers, held in the Bethel United Methodist Church at 6:00 p.m.

Attendance was lower with about 25 people, but there were several other events occurring in town the same night. Nonetheless, the HERO Project group was pleased individuals attended, and doubly pleased to have speakers sharing their stories. The addiction stories were strong, and you could “hear a pin drop” as they say, as the speakers were revealing their intimate experiences. It was extremely informative and brought up aspects one might not have thought about before, such as, for example, how well an addict can hide drugs and their addiction.

There were three speakers who kindly volunteered to tell their stories of how addiction affected them, or a family member, or a friends. All choose to remain anonymous, and the HERO Project encourages others to come forward to share their stories in this same private manner. The point is to spread awareness, and the HERO Project wants people to feel comfortable all around, whether they want to provide awareness in stories, or seek help and information as an audience member.

It takes a lot of courage to stand in front of an audience and reveal such personal stories. However, all three individuals had the same reason for coming forward. They hoped that they could make a difference in even one life, if not many lives, by telling their harrowing tale of heartbreak and loss regarding addiction, what this disease can do to individuals, and how it can devastate families and even cause death.

There was a commonality in many of their stories. The addicts could not stop using drugs, no matter what, even when they knew their lives had drastically changed for the worst. They no longer had a “choice” to do drugs or not, it took hold of them completely. This is a fallacy that people have, who look at strung out substance abuse addicts, that they can stop if they want to, but they choose not to. This is untrue, speakers enlightened the audience with true stories of just how addiction works.

*****

Can you become an addict after using drugs just once? There is a process by which the actual brain chemistry changes when using drugs. Though their mechanisms differ, most addictive drugs act to release the neurotransmitter that makes us feel good: dopamine.”

“When a person takes drugs repeatedly, their reward circuits become desensitized. Because there is more than enough dopamine around, the body stops making its own and simultaneously down-regulates the number of dopamine receptors. This means the person needs drugs just to bring their levels of dopamine back to normal. Without drugs they start feeling flat and lifeless. The person may even begin to experience symptoms such as nausea, chills, cramps, and sweating. It is the presence of these withdrawal symptoms that indicates a physical dependence.”

A speaker described the extreme nature of addiction this way: “I saw scary things, my buddy overdosed in my car two times. You’d think it would scare you but when you are in the grips of addiction, it’s hard to explain what a grip it has on you. We got needles for a dollar in the store, shot up in the parking lot, but my friend probably had a lower tolerance and overdosed. After I drove him to the hospital I grabbed the needle and shot up the rest in the parking lot. The only way I can describe it is insanity.”

A speaker mentioned fear of withdrawal symptoms as another catapult to actually make an individual keep doing drugs. A vicious cycle.

One of the speakers said he was “clean” for only six months. It was a proud moment, and he hoped he was doing a good thing, sharing his story, in hopes of helping others out there. Yes you certainly did help. The HERO Project thanks you.

Another speaker said addicts find themselves quickly at a loss financially, but even when the effects of drugs takes its toll on them physically, they still cannot stop. It is a powerful disease. Many start out saying “it” won’t happen to them, that they can control themselves, but “it” certainly did happen to them.

They lose all their possessions and money just to buy the next fix, they just cannot control the urge any longer, we learned at the meeting. Addicts borrow to the max from friends who then eventually desert them, from of lack of repayment, or out of fear, or disgust, or frustration, or wanting to disassociate, or many more reasons.

The addict even loses the support of family in some cases, who, although loving, the family was trying last ditch efforts to get the addict to stop using, but couldn’t succeed.

As one speaker put it, “He [addict] has to want it more than us” regarding rehabilitation/recovery.

*****

The addict lies to everyone. A”web of lies” as one speaker put it. The addict steals pills and money from unsuspecting relatives. Sometimes the addict runs out of options though and has to come clean to others, which then leads to recovery in some cases.

More than one speaker said grandparents who love the grandchild (addict) and want to help the addict, end up being enablers, but in the end sometimes have their savings wiped out in the process.

One speaker said the addict can even be in the hospital in the morning from a near overdose of drugs, check out by afternoon, and be at their job later, appearing “normal.’ They put on a good face and have others convinced they are not an addict, for a little while anyway, until they get caught.

Getting caught is a blessing in disguise, it sometimes gets the addict to a rehabilitation facility, and parents breath a sigh of relief. But even there, one speaker at the HERO Town Hall meeting said someone managed to sneak drugs into the facility (the parent found out after the fact) and then their loved one got hold of the drugs and relapsed. This now puts a whole new layer on trying to find a safe haven for recovery and shows how important it is to find the best rehabilitation facility out there. Some facilities focus their efforts on young people whilst others have mastered creating the privacy executives need to focus on their recovery. It all depends on the individual and researching the facilities in-depth beforehand should be made a priority.

Another speaker talked about actually driving their addict relative to the drug dealer’s house many times without knowing it. Supposedly they were taking him to a friend’s house to play video games. Only much later did they realize the addict was probably trading video games for a fix. The young addict was eventually found dead in a hotel, all alone.

Then there is the guilt of caregivers. One speaker said they feel they could have done more or had more knowledge about addiction. “I was hurt, that I didn’t know more, couldn’t do more,” he said. Another speaker said after his Mom asked the addict to move out the house, and he eventually overdosed, she still has much guilt. In a third story a survivor did not want to have a memorial for the deceased addict because she said, “I have a memorial every day.”

There is never a “convenient” time to get addicted or deal with addiction in your family. Another speaker’s spouse had just been diagnosed with stage four cancer, whose battle was eventually lost, and all the while the speaker was dealing with another family member’s addiction. The speaker thought the focus on helping the addict might have gotten him though his spouse’s death in an odd way.

Research shows that genes play a part in the possible susceptibility to drugs in a person’s life. “Whether a person decides to use alcohol or drugs is a personal choice, influenced by multiple biological, familial, psychological and sociocultural factors. But, once a person uses alcohol or drugs, the risk of developing alcoholism or drug dependence is greatly influenced by genetics. Research shows that genes are responsible for about half the risk for alcoholism and addiction, and while genetics are not the sole determinant, their presence or absence may increase the likelihood that a person will become alcohol or drug dependent.”

One speaker found this out after the fact, that his adopted child had numerous blood relatives with substance abuse. The speaker said had he known that ahead of time he might have proceeded differently. He now worries about the well-being of the children of the recovered addict.

These stories might sound familiar, we’ve heard similar ones before, if even in the media only, but somehow people still do not believe it can infiltrate their own life or family, even after hearing the problem is now an epidemic, and death rates from overdose have risen dramatically in Connecticut and across the country.

*****

The latest problem is with Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, that has been linked to multiple overdoses and deaths. The overdoses are occurring at an alarming rate. “Fentanyl is an odorless substance considered to be 25 to 50 times more potent than heroin and 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Fentanyl is potentially lethal, even at very low levels… Public Health and Law Enforcement officials believe that the pills containing Fentanyl were likely sold on the street under the guise of being legitimate hydrocodone. Additionally, the pills are marked to mimic the authentic hydrocodone product.” Officials have set up a hot line for anonymous tips. CLICK HERE to read more.

Another drug, Narcan, saved the life of one young individual, just in time, as mentioned in one speaker’s story. “Narcan™ (naloxone) is an opiate antidote. Opioids include heroin and prescription pain pills like morphine, codeine, oxycodone, methadone and Vicodin. When a person is overdosing on an opioid, breathing can slow down or stop and it can very hard to wake them from this state. Narcan™ (naloxone) is a prescription medicine that blocks the effects of opioids and reverses an overdose. It cannot be used to get a person high. If given to a person who has not taken opioids, it will not have any effect on him or her, since there is no opioid overdose to reverse.”

*****

As you can see, lives change dramatically when the addiction disease hits. One speaker said it began in middle school. We are all susceptible, and from a younger and younger age it seems. The people who have experienced this first hand, whether an addict themselves or with a person they know, realize the hell that awaits for others, and some of them are doing all that is possible to bring awareness to others before it hits their family, or is too late and they lose a loved one to addiction, that might have been prevented. They are trying desperately to be heard. They have a lot to tell us, and we should listen carefully, and then spread the word.

For the recovering addict, a speaker mentioned that addiction and recovery is “A life long process, a life changing event.” The speaker said, “I guess the main thing that I try to do is pray, and I try to think of how I can be useful to others, get out of myself. It’s a horrible disease. If I can say something worth anything to others, then it was worth coming here.”

These are meetings everyone should attend, at least once. Be informed. Don’t let addiction happen to you or your loved ones. Save a life.

The HERO Project so far …

“The HERO Project, Heroin and Opiate Awareness” group began a few months ago and held its first fundraising event, “The HERO Project Pizza Challenge, Changing Lives 1 Slice at a Time” on March 9, 2016 at Bethel United Methodist Church. The aim was just to get addiction information to the public in a casual atmosphere and provide awareness of a growing local and national addiction problem, and eat some great pizza too.
Many local Pizza businesses contributed pizza and salad and attendees tasted them all and voted for the best pizza. (Famous Pizza won, but all pizzas tasted great.) At the same time attendees could obtain much information about addiction, recovery, treatment, sources, etc. and talk to group members if they desired. Over a thousand dollars was raised and more than 100 individuals attended.
It is a good start.

HERO Project group members are:
Donald E. Olson, Donald W. Olson Senior (dad), Kathy Olson (mom), Jeff McKenna, Julia Ambrosi, Paula Antolini, Bobbie Cahill, Jenn Henry Lawlor, and Dan Bishop.
