Sen. Chris Murphy to Call on Senate to Pass His Amendment to Block Sec. Devos from Using Federal Funds to Arm Teachers

WASHINGTON – After the New York Times reported that the U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is drafting guidance permitting school districts to use federal funds to purchase firearms for teachers, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) and Appropriations Committees, introduced an emergency amendment to the FY 2019 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill that would prevent school districts from using federal funding under the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grant (SSAE) to arm teachers.
