GROTON — On Monday, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) will meet with Groton Mayor Rita Schmidt, Waterford First Selectman Dan Steward, Stonington First Selectman George Crouse, the Executive Director of the Connecticut Institute for Resilience & Climate Adaptation, members of the Marine Trades Association, and other local officials to listen and learn about how the Army Corps’ recently-released Draft Dredged Material Management Plan (DMMP) identifies new environmentally sound alternatives for the handling of dredged materials and supports vital Connecticut economic interests. Murphy will underscore his support for the DMMP and emphasize that without implementation of the DMMP, Connecticut will see a 15% loss in navigation-dependent economic activity revenue over the next two decades. Murphy will also provide an update on his efforts to secure more federal funding for the Sound’s restoration.

Long Island Sound is a proven economic driver for Connecticut, generating between $17 billion and $37 billion annually in tourism, fishing, shellfishing, and boating, not to mention the more than 1,300 square miles of coast that serve as home to hundreds of diverse wildlife species.
