Sandy Hook Memorial Mural at Newtown High School is Covered, Upsets Students
A mural in Newtown High School (NHS), in tribute to the Sandy Hook tragedy, is a form of art therapy that was meant to bring comfort to students but has been upsetting some students so the painting has now been covered up.
The 10-foot by 15-foot mural painting was created on the NHS wall in late 2013 by painter Lindsay Fuori. It is an image of a dreamcatcher with 26 beads, with the words “In loving memory” and “12-14-12.” The image is in memory of the massacre at the elementary school in which 20 first-graders and six educators at the elementary school were killed. It was painted by Fuori as a senior-year project and included art therapy research and a guide to local therapy resources.
In the last two years the school administration became worried for the welfare of the students and thought seeing the words “In loving memory” and date “12-14-12,” on the artwork might be causing distress, a reminder of the massacre.
At the beginning of the school year an attempt had been made to alter the mural and a decision was made to remove the words “In loving memory” and “12-14-12,” which were painted out by Fuori.
The administration eventually decided to cover the painting entirely with plasterboard last October, even though they knew that could be controversial, Superintendent Joseph Erardi Jr. said in a note to families, Even though they had difficult choices, they needed to take action.
A student petition followed, wanting to uncover the painting, and the scope of how to remedy the situation remained at large and with no solution yet.
