Relay For Life Kick Off Party Reveals New Schedule of Next Relay, June 11, 11 to 11!
A delicious buffet from La Zingara, good conversation and much laughter, aptly describes the Relay For Life Kickoff Party that took place in Bethel, CT, on November 16, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. The start of something good! Bethel First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker dropped by to support the cause too.
Co-Chairs Cheryl Hallock and Paul Rogers and Staff Partner Alyssa Amaturo, who lost her brother to cancer years ago, talked about the past year’s fundraising success and the details about the 2016 Relay For Life.
Cheryl Hallock announced the top four individual fundraisers who were: Carol Ann Vriebrock $4, 717; Laura McCormick $4,730; Carol Eagan $4,917; and Melissa Andros $5,341; for a total of $19,705.
The top three teams were: Scooby Strong $9,503; Captain’s Cureageous $10,850; Pink Ladies $16,361; for a total of $36,714. Grand total for Relay For Life 2015 is $98,274.
Hallock said the goal for the next Relay for Life is $122,000 and 10 more teams than the last event had (52 teams were at last event). The goal is for 70 survivors, 50 on Relay teams (64 survivors at last event, 35 of which were on Relay teams). They are also aiming for 400 team members and 450 participants at the next event.
The Relay For Life Expo was also discussed, an event that just took place last Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, in Massachusetts, and many volunteers from the Bethel area attended. Hope Lodge, a healing place for survivors, was particularly mentioned. Hope Lodge provides patients with free, comfortable and safe housing while they receive treatment and is supported entirely through the generosity of continued contributions to the American Cancer Society. Guests who stay at a Hope Lodge in Manhattan, Buffalo and Rochester, New York, are provided with private rooms and the comforts of home. Patients and their loved ones are offered comfortable, secure accommodations in a supportive environment at no cost.
Co-chair Paul Rogers revealed some changes that the next Relay For Life event will have. First, the event will be all day on a Saturday on June 11, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., only one day, unlike other years which were two days, and the event begins earlier than other years too. So all you have to remember is 11 11 11! The theme for the Relay for Life will be “Wish Upon a Star” so any theme related to stars is welcome.
Alyssa Amaturo said Relay For Life volunteers will be at the Bethel Tree Lighting Ceremony this Friday, November 27th, selling Luminaria bags from 2:00 p.m. onward, during the “Light Up New England” tribute that is being held all across New England. People will be placing Luminaria tribute bags in their driveways, porches, etc. honoring the people they love who have battled or are battling cancer, to show the power of Relay in New England. “We are hoping to show the people of Bethel who do not know what Relay is, the power of it, and that every bag has a name, every bag has a story, and that’s what we’re fighting for,” said Amaturo. There will even be a fire pit with S’mores being made, from 3:00-6:00 p.m.!

It unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all.
