Poetry Competition: Bethel Creates Position of Honorary Poet Laureate

The Town of Bethel, in collaboration with Bethel Arts, is pleased to announce the creation of the position of Honorary Poet Laureate.

Honorary Poet Laureate will be an unpaid position and will be appointed by the Board of Selectmen. Duties include composing poems for special events and occasional leadership roles in expanding the community’s knowledge of literature and poetry. The term of appointment will be two years.

This opportunity is open to all Bethel residents. The Board of Selectmen will receive recommendations based on work submitted to a panel of volunteers with the Bethel Arts Association. The candidate must submit 3 original works of poetry as well as a special submission to be read at the opening ceremony of the new Bethel police station. Upon reaching finalists, the panel will conduct an in-person interview where candidates will read their work.

Please email info@bethelartsct.org with your name, address, phone number and your original works of poetry. All styles are welcome, but please choose something that can be read at a live sitting.

The judges will base their decisions of written work on poetic understanding, concept and style. After passing the first round of written submissions, the judges will be rating on voice and articulation, readability, and stage presence.

The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18, and a residentof Bethel.

Deadline for submissions is Sunday, June 3, 2018.
