Bethel 33rd Annual Columbus Day Parade and Flag Ceremony, Oct. 12
On October 12, 2015, at 9:00 a.m., Bethel once again officially celebrated the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas, which happened on October 12, 1492.
The beautiful but slightly chilly weather was perfect for the small parade which traveled down Greenwood Avenue from South Street and proceeded to P.T.Barnum Square. A Bethel Police car lead the way, then Christopher Columbus’ ship (a motorboat in tow) “sailed” down the streets of Bethel with 50-year Bethel resident Rich Zuvich dressed as Columbus and Gina Clarizio as Queen Isabella. The event began 33 years ago, initiated by Clarizo and the late First Selectman Ed Mills, to honor the Italian heritage. Other vehicles included a replica sailing ship and flags on a Belardinelli Tire Company truck and Tim Beeble’s 1974 Fiat 124 Spider, that he said was in the Bethel Columbus Day Parade for the 15th time. The Bethel Volunteer Fire Department ambulance completed the parade.
First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker and Selectman Paul Szatkowski attended and spoke the event. Szatkowski read a passage in Italian that he said meant, “May God Bless our country, our town, our people, and thank you for coming today.”
Gaetano Russotti, a 43-year Danbury resident, was also present, who had been recently honored by the Amerigo Vespucci Lodge in Danbury, CT.
