A lovely evening was enjoyed by attendees of the first night of the Bethel Summer Concert Series 2016, which began at 6:00 p.m. Sunday night, July 17, 2016, on the CJH Municipal Center green with the lively Sonny Carroll Band.

‘Last of the Big Bands’ Sonny Carroll Band, Kicks Off the First Night of Bethel Summer Concert Series 2016

A lovely evening was enjoyed by attendees of the first night of the Bethel Summer Concert Series 2016, which began at 6:00 p.m. Sunday night, July 17, 2016, on the CJH Municipal Center green with the lively Sonny Carroll Band.

The Sonny Carroll Band featured “the music of yesterday, today and tomorrow, something old, something new.”  One of the last big bands in the area, the Sonny Carroll Orchestra formed in 1973 and has been pleasing crowds ever since. The 22-piece band boasts trumpets, trombones, saxophones, guitar, bass, drums and vocals.

Spotted at the event was CT State Senator Toni Boucher, who was handing out cookies and chatting with the crowd and also giving dog biscuit treats to four-legged furry friends.  Sen. Boucher is presently a Republican member of the Connecticut Senate representing the 26th Assembly District which includes the towns of Bethel, New Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Weston, Westport and Wilton.  She is currently up for re-election.

It is so interesting who you might meet at local Bethel events.  Bethel Advocate learned about a very special couple, acquaintances of Sen. Boucher, whom she met at a Ridgefield Hospice fundraiser a while back, she said, who we found sitting in lawn chairs on the green, enjoying the music.  The couple showed us that love can be found at any age.

Ridgefield residents Richard Mayhew, 96, and Vera Caporale, 87, met after each of their life-long spouses (Mayhew married 64 years and Caporale married 54 years) had passed away just 24 hours apart in February 2006.  They were visiting St. Mary’s Cemetery and realized that their spouse’s graves were located “just 50 feet apart,” they said, and this is where they met.  Mayhew and Caporale have been inseparable ever since.
The couple boasts that they still live in “separate homes that are 4.1 miles away from one another,” Mr. Mayhew said, but “We see each other every day.”  They like to go out to eat, attend concerts on the green and go to shows at the Palace Theater in Danbury, CT, Ms. Caporale said.
Mr. Mayhew said he was a pilot for Pan Am in the 1960’s (Pan American Airways, the largest international air carrier in the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991) and said he flew Pan Am Flight 101 to New York from London, England, on Feb. 7, 1964, with the famous Beatles on board, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.  This was the Beatles’ first trip to America when they were to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show that night.
Mayhew said he talked to the Beatles a little on that flight, but not much because,” I was working,” he said.  Mayhew didn’t really have a favorite Beatle because “They were age 17 and I was a lot older,” he said, so he didn’t follow their much of their music at the time.
Mayhew flew the Beatles back to London too, a week later.  Mr. Mayhew received a standing ovation when it was announced during the ‘All You Need Is Love’ Beatles tribute concert at the Ridgefield Playhouse, that he was the Beatles pilot who landed the four musicians at John F. Kennedy airport in 1964.  This honor occurred on Feb. 7, 2014, the 50th anniversary of the band’s arrival in America.
Mayhew and Caporale held hands from time to time as we chatted, and when I pointed that out Mr. Mayhew jokingly said, “There’s no law against it,” and he smiled.  Ms. Caporale, also smiling, said, “He is always petting me, that’s to show that he loves me.”  Ah love.

You’ll hear a musical focus influenced by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and many more.

  78. Neat so far… a … Neat so far… a short trip to a local accordion shop should get the one or two buzzing reeds sounding nice in no time. Now, with free-bass accordions (all the buttons make individual notes), you can usually automate that half as well to play bass, countermelody, etc. but with a Stradella bass (some buttons are notes, some are chords), it’s not so easy. Still, a great start so far!

  81. I can attest that I consider bicycle parking availability before I go somewhere. I have a semi-electric rMartin bike that is my best exercise machine in the summer. I have learned where there are good poles (sign, utility, etc) that I can lock my bike to. It is a lot of trouble but there is one near Phillips drug on Main St. so I can support them. That greatly compressed the season as PR attempted to make up the missed races with far too many races not being completed due to the 11 pm curfew.
