Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut’s Accessible Art Meets Summer Head On with 8 Shining Exhibitions

In its Tenth year, the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut has made art accessible beyond gallery or museum through its Accessible Art series, a year-long, multi-site program, joining Business with Art and made possible, in part, by the Fairfield County’s Community Foundation. The artists and venues are diverse, and the art even more so. Eight shining exhibitions go public on Tuesday, July 5th, and run through Friday, September 2nd. Artists include Anna Chamberlin (Newtown), Kateleen Foy (Newtown), Helga Jensen-Ruopp (Hawleyville), Honorah O’Neill (Bethel), Julia Provey (Sandy Hook), Peter Schachter (Danbury), Ival Stratford-Kovner (Bethel), and Virginia Zimmerman (Sandy Hook).

For her, art can inspire, motivate, and intrigue children to think out of the box, push their comfort zones a little, and learn to express their emotions in a safe, healthy and productive way.

Throughout high school, she did whatever she could to work with pictures and now attends Pratt Institute, studying Creative Art Therapy. She has traveled extensively throughout the USA, Europe and Australia, continuing to take classes and carrying her camera with her every step of the way.

Julia is a third generation painter. She grew up in Brooklyn, NY, where she was given the inspiration for her art work by the diverse beauty of a multi-cultured community. Hence the title of her exhibition, United Humanity. She enjoys raising her three children amidst the nature of the rural landscape surrounding her hometown.

The Danbury Hackerspace @ the Innovation Center, 158 Main Street, (203) 493-4225
Peter creates his images on an iPad using the Sketchbook Pro software. Essentially his works are drawn by hand with a stylus; while he aims to create images that are painterly in nature, the creative process often allows for unanticipated effects to emergel. The wide range of virtual media provided in the software allows for a blending of drawing, painting, air brush and printmaking techniques in a single work.
Ival Stratford-Kovner
Danbury City Hall, 155 Deer Hill Avenue, (203) 797-4511
Figurative Expressionist would describe Ival’s paintings, works in large scale so viewers may enter into her world of cavalry drills in Newtown (her show is entitled Horse Drawn), Richter Art Center foliage, or Putnam Park where she learned to walk. A community activist, she says, “As Bob Marley succeeded in using music, I hope visual art will also continue to lead to peace and understanding in the world.” With her participation in Accessible Art, her work will tie into installations, collaborations and specific references to historical time periods in this region.

As a story teller, Virginia weaves time sensitive messages and images into art. The result can be joyfully playful, culturally important, historically specific or educationally minded, which she calls “interactive visual ‘play’.” The works submitted to Accessible Art are from her recent show Ethereal Newtown, which was the culmination of a 2014 individual artist grant from the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.
