Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty Visits the Regional YMCA Children’s Center in Bethel

Regional YMCA faculty and teachers told Esty about the School Readiness efforts and the before/after/summer school programming. Together, they discussed the need for kindergarten preparedness, the efforts to close the education achievement gap, and the challenges that many of the low-income families face that in turn impact students’ academic performance.

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty Visits the Regional YMCA Children’s Center in Bethel

Bethel Advocate was pleased to cover the visit of Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty as she toured Bethel’s Regional YMCA Children’s Center on August 26, 2015.  The teachers and staff were welcoming and knowledgeable and the children were delightful and wide-eyed.  The students presented Esty with a large colorful poster they had made, that contained their names and hand prints and had a big “Thank You” on it, and also presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Esty toured the center, visited YMCA classrooms, and spent her time reading and playing with the preschool students and discussing important issues with staff and other representatives.  The young students were drawn to Esty as she interacted with many of them.  She sat on a small chair in the center of one of the classrooms and she reached for children’s books in a basket on the floor and talked to the children about the books.  The students eagerly responded and pointed to pictures in the books.  Esty rested on both knees to get closer to the children’s level and the children surrounded her and hugged her tightly.

The visit came about after Jen Pane, YMCA Director, and Julie Pryor-Bennett, VP of Advancement, met with Representative Esty at a Chamber of Commerce event. As a longtime supporter of the YMCA (her father served on the national board), she was happy to find time in her schedule to visit the YMCA.  The staff of the Regional YMCA was joined by Eileen Costello of Education Connection and John Cattelan of the Connecticut YMCA Alliance.
