Public visitation and a vigil Mass are scheduled today at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for Cardinal Edward Egan, the former archbishop of New York City. He will will be entombed in the crypt at the cathedral after his funeral mass on Tuesday. Four of his predecessors and Msgr. Michael Lavelle, who served as Rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral for 52 years, are also entombed there.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the current archbishop of New York, will receive Cardinal Egan’s body at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, at the Fifth Ave. entrance. Private visitation for family members only, will follow. Dolan will deliver the homily at Egan’s funeral Mass Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Cardinal Egan died died at age 82, of cardiac arrest at a New York hospital at 2:20 p.m on March 5, 2015. The archdiocese said Egan was having lunch at his residence at the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary when he was rushed to NYU Langone Medical Center in cardiac arrest.
He was born on April 2, 1932, in in Oak Park, Ill., a Chicago suburb, and suffered from polio as a child. He was 68 years old when he was selected to be the city’s ninth archbishop on May 11, 2000, by Pope John Paul II, who appointed him to the College of Cardinals on Jan. 21, 2001, after John Cardinal O’Connor died. At the time Egan was the head of the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT. He lead the Archdiocese of New York for nine years.
Egan was there during the 9/11 attack and accompanied then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani to the location of the Twin Towers, spending the day giving last rites to those who perished, distributed rosaries to workers, or comforting first responders as they searched through the rubble for survivors.
