Bethel resident Frances Pulle’s “Letter to the Editor” to Bethel Advocate:

“Sheila Matthews is guilty of spewing an overly simplified, nonsensical, sophomoric interpretation of the first amendment. (Sandy Hook column trampled on rights, News-Times, Jan. 28). In her obvious zeal to defend the supposed “rights”  of ex-prof James Tracy, Matthews does more than twist the facts–she rewrites them. In so doing she confuses an issue which most sane people refuse to even acknowledge. What is that issue? That the Sandy Hook tragedy was “fiction,” nothing more than a tall tale… 

“Tracy does have a constitutional right to question– as we all do–certain aspects of the Newtown shootings and its aftermath. That town’s police response and preparedness is an example. However, Tracy’s actions go well beyond that.  His assertion that Sandy Hook did not happen is more than “hurtful, offensive.”  He is not just thinking “critically.” His words are not just hateful.  They are now the sticks and stones that harm and continue to harm.  When this happens his public “musings” become what the U.S. Supreme Court calls “fighting words.”  Which is not protected speech.     

“The fighting words doctrine was established by the High Court in the 1942 case Chaplinski v. New Hampshire.  In a vote of 9-0 the Court held that the “lewd and obscene, the profane, the libelous, and the insulting or ‘fighting words’ –those that by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace”–do not lie within the boundary  of protection afforded by the first amendment.  

“In later rulings the Court decreed that fighting words differ from “inciting speech” (take some notes here, Tracy/Matthews) in that the former are intended to cause the hearer to react to the speaker.

“By declaring a well-documented/color-photographed/traumatically-witnessed event in recent Connecticut history a fanciful fabrication–a “hoax” in his words– James Tracy calls attention to himself.  Perhaps this was his intention all along. What is not up for debate is the following:  His scurrilous and sadistic attacks reveal a fantastically constructed world view that makes him unfit to educate our impressionably young.  Florida Atlantic University should have said good riddance to him sooner.”

The Matthews article, “Sandy Hook hoaxer deserved firing” (News-Times, Jan. 28) was in response to Professor James Tracy’s recent words to students at Florida Atlantic University claiming that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings never happened, and were a hoax. 
Journalist Smith criticized Tracy saying that he went far beyond the First Amendment (which she supports) with his words and “was wrong to spew his nonsense to students.” Then Matthews said “Toughin Up” to Smith, and Matthews defended Tracy’s right of the First Amendment’s free speech.
Now resident Frances Pulle has her opinion of the First Amendment and the writers interpretations, in her editorial to us, above.
