Bethel Resident Connie Sweeney VanDeWater Disagrees with the “Woman Who Saw the Gun” Amanda Neville, in Caraluzzi’s Market

Bethel resident Amanda Neville recently posted her editorial on her Facebook page that she wrote on February 29, 2016 (“Amanda Neville: Stores should make choice on open carry policy.”) stemming from an incident in Caraluzzi’s Market in Bethel, CT, in which she saw a man with an “open carry” (visible) gun. Neville believes that stores should not allow guns on their premises, and despite CT State laws allowing open or concealed carry, Neville says stores still have a choice to say no. Neville feels it is the store owners’ duty to ban guns in order to keep people safe.

Neville’s editorial begins with “I am the woman who saw the gun.  While shopping in Caraluzzi’s Market in Bethel, I saw a man open carrying a handgun, in a holster, on his hip. When I went to management and told them about the situation, they made it clear that they would do nothing about it, so I left the store, and made sure they knew why.”

Here is Sweeney VanDeWater’s reply:

“I would like to respond to Amanda Neville’s commentary on Feb. 28 about stores having policies on open carry (“Stores should make choice on open carry,” The News-Times). First, I would like to say I am not a gun owner; I am just an ordinary Bethel mom. I support the Caraluzzi Food Market on this subject and agree that they shouldn’t be pulled into a political debate.

“If Ms. Neville has a problem with safety, it is the state of Connecticut that she should have a problem with, not the Caraluzzi stores. Connecticut state law allows for people to carry a gun in plain sight. I work in a retail environment and occasionally see a gun on a belt. Do I feel unsafe? Of course not! If a responsible gun owner is wearing his gun in plain sight, I do not feel threatened in the slightest. This person is not a threat.

“A person carrying an illegal gun isn’t going to broadcast it so that they can be asked to see their gun permit. Only a law-abiding citizen would carry a gun in this manner. Some stores put up signs that suggest that they would rather you not do this. I have never seen a sign forbidding it, they usually just suggest it.

“In this case someone who has the gun on their belt has to make a choice. They can put on a jacket or sweater so no one knows they are carrying or they can leave the firearm in their car. Leaving a gun in a car is not safer than having it on a person. Someone might break into the car and then who knows who would end up with the gun. I feel that a responsible person would continue to carry the gun in order to keep it safe.

“The first time I saw a gun on a belt was on a trip to New Hampshire. Since I had never seen this before, I will admit that at first I was a bit frightened. Then I found out that in New Hampshire the law is that if you have a gun on your person, it must be in sight. Upon checking, I found that this state has less gun-related crime than most states. Perhaps when criminals walk into a store and see others carrying guns, they decide that it is best not to use their weapon.

“I feel the guy in Caraluzzi’s market had as much a right to be there as Ms. Neville. If Ms. Neville would rather shop in a store where the people that carry guns hide them, that is her choice but I feel she is just walking around with her eyes closed. I have always felt safe shopping at Caraluzzi’s and I will continue to shop there. I would never bring my children anywhere I felt was unsafe but I bring my children to Caraluzzi’s with confidence.”
