Michael McLachlan and Union Savings Bank presented National Women’s History Month “7th Annual Women’s History Essay Contest” awards to area students in a March 29, 2016 ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at Danbury City Hall. Students from public and parochial elementary schools in the greater Danbury area participated in the contest by submitting an essay about a woman of influence. The contest was entitled, “Important Women in Connecticut’s History and How Their Contributions to the State and Nation Affect Me.”

Bethel Middle School sixth graders Amisha Malkani (Winner) and Amel Hilmi (Runner up) were among the award recipients for the Connecticut state essay contest “7th Annual Women’s History Essay Contest” in which one winner and runner up was selected from each school.

“At Union Savings Bank, we strongly support youth education programs throughout greater Danbury,” said Union Savings Bank Director of Community Relations Michele Martin. “This essay contest brings area schools, students, teachers and parents together in a collaborative effort which encourages children to research and write about influential and inspiring Connecticut women. We’re proud to support the contest and we congratulate the winners and runners-up for their very thoughtful efforts.”
“The students’ essays were engaging and informative,” Sen. McLachlan said. “We are very proud of them. Many thanks to Union Savings Bank for donating the contest prizes. Without their generosity, this event would not be possible.”

Here is Amisha Malkani’s essay:
“I went to war with my generation, but instead of a rifle, I took a typewriter and a camera. Then I joined the battlefields of South Asia.” – Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt. An expert of South Asia, partly because Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt spent time there, during a horrific time for multiple countries, the Vietnam War. Billions of lives lost in that war, from the west, the United States, stretching all the way across the world to Australia. But Hamilton-Merritt, was instead documenting a secret war. The War in Laos was going unnoticed by the outside world. The world was focused on the Vietnam War. Hamilton-Merritt was a curious journalist, and found out about Laos instead, and traveled there to write. The CIA and American Government were bombing Laos with almost 270 million bombs. But Jane Hamilton-Merritt had the courage to go to Laos while this was happening and document what was going on. She wrote about everything about the secret war. In Laos, Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt didn’t just write about the bombings, but about other violations, by other governments. Certain governments had been made quite a few violations in chemical-biological warfare, genocide, refugee issues, and violations against human rights. Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt had gone trial after trial fighting for what was right. She took on these violations and the bombings and had fought for them to stop. The bombings were ended, thanks to Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt’s article in Reader’s Digest, in 1973.
Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt is one of the many women from Connecticut who should, and have been, recognized. They have all done so much, for the state, for the country, for the world. While men have again and again been noted, women have barely been noticed through history. It is time to change that. Amazing women like Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt have the courage and heart to do what others can’t do, including men. But what we don’t see, is that they have the work of a lifetime, nominees of the Nobel Peace Prize, They have done amazing work, whether from Connecticut or anywhere else in the world. Women’s History Month may only last a month, but these women are remembered the whole year round. Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt among so many other women who were in the shadows, they are now recognized, along with the many more to come.
