Bethel ‘Hero Project Pizza Challenge’ Event Raises Funds to Fight Heroin and Opiate Addiction
“The HERO Project, Heroin and Opiate Awareness” group held its first fundraising event, “The HERO Project Pizza Challenge, Changing Lives 1 Slice at a Time” at 6:00 p.m. on March 9, 2016 at Bethel United Methodist Church.
The Bethel HERO Project‘s mission is “A caring community working together to raise awareness through education and events about the need to resist heroin and opiate abuse.”
Bethel residents and others came out in force to help promote a good start for the new Bethel HERO Project to fight drug abuse and promote awareness. Local businesses stepped up to the plate and donated pizza and salad and other services to help make this event a success.
This first fundraiser was a huge success, raising $1,000 in only two hours. Thank you Bethel!
Guests enjoyed a variety of local pizza and a salad, while information was provided about the drug abuse and addiction problem and information for sources of help for those afflicted.
A raffle provided prizes for the lucky winners, shown below.

After tasting all pizzas, guests voted for the best pizza. AND … the winner for the Best Pizza in Bethel 2016 is … Famous Pizza! (although all pizzas were delicious!) Congratulations!

Many thanks to Famous Pizza, Grassy Plain Pizza, Sal’s Pizza, Capri Pizza, all of whom donated pizza, and to Bethel Pizza House for donating salad. Thanks to Bethel United Methodist Church for providing the event location, WXCI for running the PSA, the students at ACE school in Danbury c/o Kyle Trocolla for the creation of the PSA and the event flyer, and Adam Nelson for his donation of the graphics and creation of an additional poster, and Bethel Advocate news media for publicity, story and photo coverage.
Founder of the HERO group is Donald E. Olson, who recently formed the HERO group after a family relative was lost due to drug addiction and overdose. Olson and the HERO group are determined to save lives and bring awareness to everyone, about this growing heroin and opiate addiction problem in Connecticut and beyond. Members of the group are: Donald E. Olson, Mr. and Mrs. Olson, Jen Lawlor, Bobbie Cahill, Dan Bishop, Jeff McKenna, Julia Ambrosi, and Paula Antolini. The all-volunteer group helped to make the first “Hero Project Pizza Challenge” fundraiser a reality, and all were there to help. They could not have done it without the help of the community, and Bethel is a great community!
