A military helicopter crashed late Tuesday, March 10, 2015, during a routine training exercise in the Florida Panhandle. The helicopter was reported missing at 8:30 p.m. Central Time, reports Fox News.
Seven Marines and four soldiers are missing and search-and-rescue crews are currently looking for survivors.
Rescue crews reported having poor visibility problems due to fog in the area. Debris was found near the Navarre Bridge, on a small strip of land between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Eglin Air Force Base spokesman Andy Bourland said, reports the Associated Press on Fox News.
The Marines are part of a special operations group based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and the soldiers are from a Hammond, Louisiana-based National Guard unit. The Blackhawk helicopter was part of the 1-244th Assault Helicopter Battalion in Hammond, Louisiana.
The helicopter flew out of Destin’s airport and joined other aircraft in the exercise. A second helicopter participating in the exercise returned safely.
Names of crash victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
