It has been two months since I saw someone open carrying a weapon at the Caraluzzi’s market in Bethel. It has been two months since I made phone calls, sent emails, and, after receiving no response, posted on social media. Caraluzzi’s has yet to respond to me. Only after many different people with many different viewpoints posted on social media, did they come out with a statement effectively saying that they would do nothing.

While the controversy rages on there are some stores who have chosen to ban weapons on their premises. They are listening and they have made their voices clear. Do stores that do or say nothing understand that their passivity is in essence giving permission to people to open carry, despite an assertion that they don’t want to get involved?

Allow me to be clear – those of us who want weapons banned in stores understand that open carry is legal. We also understand that stores and businesses have the right to choose to ban weapons; conversely they are not legally required to allow weapons.

When a store bans open carry why do some gun owners continue to carry weapons into these stores which specifically prohibit them, all the while claiming to be law-abiding gun owners?  How is it law-abiding to break the law?  You don’t get to have it both ways.

My bigger question is – how am I to know that the person who is next to me in the checkout aisle has the proper training and permits, and is responsible? Am I supposed to assume that anyone who is  carrying a gun is a good guy with a gun? What proof do  I have of that just by looking at you?

At this point no one has answered any of these questions. There have been intimidation tactics thrown around, some names called, and some veiled threats made.

I understand that we have differences, and I appreciate them. I also understand that some people feel safer with guns, and that is a right that they don’t want to lose. At the heart of the matter I’m not advocating for people to lose their rights. I am, however, advocating that the stores make their environment safe for ALL of their customers.

What I think that the other side needs to understand is that we have rights and concerns as well, and they are just as valid as theirs. Whether you agree with us or not, I certainly would hope that everyone can agree that the tactics that have been used thus far are not conducive to finding a solution to a major problem that needs to be solved.

More importantly – how does your right to carry a gun supersede my right to feel safe, and why is that a judgement call that you get to make that I don’t?
